Guest Speaker (continued)

So, I went to the school to be a guest speaker on Friday! It was interesting. I was speaking with the language director mostly in Chinese throughout the day.

I prepared an entire script and slides only the night before because I’m just so good at leaving everything to the last minute. However, I didn’t even need the script in the end lol. The first two classes were beginners and low intermediate classes. So, I gave a brief intro in Chinese, maybe answered some questions in Chinese, then mostly used English. In the afternoon, I spoke to an AP Chinese class. A lot of them were actually just international students from China, but a small handful weren’t. Essentially, my presentation was more for them lol. But I did share about my career and how Chinese could be useful for it, etc. Anyways, it was fun.

The director has even asked if I’d be interested in giving a lecture to some PhD/master’s students for language education. I’m having some hardcore imposter syndrome right now, because I swear my presentation was suboptimal, but it feels nice.

TV Shows

Lately, I’ve been watching The First Half of My Life (我的前半生). You can watch it all on YouTube for free!! It’s really good and not too hard to follow. There are not any English subtitles, but there are Chinese subtitles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbJVPaegTvM&list=PLkvG4EWPDB0nr4g2SNSjNnthf_g5ZY72w

I’m also excited to start watching 再见爱人 since they just started a new season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdGIx7vdW08&pp=ygUPemFpIGppYW4gYWkgcmVu

Another one I watched recently and enjoyed was 开端 - Reset ∞.

My problem with all of the native Chinese TV shows on youtube is that it’s always burnt in subs. I’m just not high enough level yet to be able to read burnt in subs properly, too many unknown characters/words, disappear too fast, so I love mouse over dictionary add-on that can solve all those problems. But a mouse over dictionary only works with proper non-burnt in subtitles (and I’ve edited the dictionary add-on I use so it shows HSK level and tracks what words I mouse over etc so I love it even more). Also can’t copy+paste from burnt in subs so if you want to study that sentence somewhere else etc it’s really annoying. End up generally only watching Netflix because it comes with proper real non-burnt in subs, but the selection is super limited that way. The solution of course is to get better, but that seems like hard work :stuck_out_tongue:

Shows look cool, will check them out!

I feel that! It’s hard, and doesn’t really work with the “n + 1” method of immersion if you’re not there yet with recognition. One potential alternative is using the “auto-generated” subtitles on YouTube LOL but that typically only works well if they’re speaking very clearly. In the case of a lot of these TV shows though, they’re speaking naturally. So, a lot of words end up blended, and the auto-generate doesn’t catch them very well.

Also, you’d mentioned that plugin before, I was actually hunting for the thread recently, and I couldn’t find it. What’s the name of the one that you’re using?

I’ll look into this one! I asked my bf and he said it’s kind of like a thriller(?) But he hasn’t watched it. So, we may end up watching that one together after we finish 我的前半生. Thank you

So there are many (big ones being Language Reactor and Migaku), but they’re both really complicated, and often have 82873 useless features and a whole website with subscription services they keep trying to get you to subscript to. However I wanted something simple and light weight so I went with Zhongwen (or the Firefox Version). The only thing it does is the pop-up dictionary. I love it - super quick/simple/easy. Works on any text including youtube/netflix subtitles etc. Generally the content I want is that i+1 style stuff you mentioned so mostly I only need to look up one word in a sentence and for that, it works perfectly!

I also happen to be a professional programmer … so after using it for a while I customised my version a bit. My home brew version does exactly what the normal one does, but also shows frequency rank of each character/words on the pop up from the SUBTLEX-CH (a ranking that comes from film subtitles so is generally about as close to true spoken frequency as you can get). This lets me know if a word isn’t in say the top ~5,000 from the frequency list which I flat out don’t care about yet. I also made it log every word I mouse over and count how many times I do, so I can then find the words I keep looking up repeatedly and study them (right now the top of that list is 情况 which I’ve looked up 46 times … clearly I should study it more … I also know that 情况 is ranked #330 in frequency list so is SUPER common and really is worth my time). Even without all that though, Zhongwen (or any of them) are still super useful.

It definitely has suspense elements, but it’s more like a who-dun-it investigation/solve the puzzle show. You’re never worried the main character is about to get horribly murdered, but you are (or at least I was) often hooked on what happens next and who does what/why. It’s also based on a book so there is a solid resolution at the end.

HSK 5 & HanziHero

I went to go check how many more words I had to “learn” to cover HSK 5 in HH, and it turns out I’ve already covered HSK 5 and HSK 6 vocabulary on here! I know HH may not necessarily cover all of the vocab because of 多音字 but it was still a pleasant surprise!

So, I’ll be taking a break from learning new stuff on HH. Rather, I’ll just be reviewing on a daily basis, and continuing my writing practice of my errors.

Sweating a little bit at the thought of going back into the study grind again, but this is what I love. Very double edged lol.

Shows

I finished 我的前半生! Definitely my favorite type of drama. Sappy, romantic, but not cringey.

I also already finished To the Wonder 我的阿勒泰 (English subtitles available!). Girl who wants to go to the city and be a write fails, and goes to Xinjiang countryside with her mom, and falls in love with it.

I’ve just started Romance of Our Parents 父母爱情. This link has English subtitles but the version without English subtitles has slightly better quality. Starting from the 1900s and following a couple through their life.

I have 开端 - Reset among my personal list of shows to watch haha.

Reading

I’ve probably mentioned it 1000 times in this thread, but I need to get a grip and start reading more in Chinese. This is part of why I’m taking a minor break from learning new characters and vocabulary on HH, and just focusing on reviewing, reading, and additionally studying for the HSK.

Writing & Practice

I need to practice making sentences myself. I’ve been trying to write what I want to say, and having DeepSeek correct it. And each time is so painful lol. DeepSeek does an excellent job; it shows me how I’m lacking.

Learning Resources

Ninchanese

I’ve been bouncing around so many different apps and websites for years. I think every app has it’s ups and down (with the exception of Duolingo being the absolute worst of them all, tragically).

It kind of follows a story where you’re on an adventure. There’s a whole plot and everything. You can skip it if you want! I skip it lol. It’s cute, but I’m very impatient.

Levels

Recently, I dove into Ninchanese. I actually tried it out a couple of years ago, but I wasn’t totally into it at the time. However, It breaks levels down into HSK1,HSK2,HSK3,HSK4,HSK5 I, HSK5 II, HSK6 I, HSK6 II, plus a couple of other levels that focus on learning radicals.

Grammar

Overall it’s not bad. I like that it makes you practice building sentences with very specific grammar in mind. Additionally, it provides you a pretty well-written page explaining the grammar - which is something that I loved about Duolingo while they still had it (before their monster-monetization).

This is probably my favorite feature, because I think I struggle with building “correct” sentences a lot of times; particularly with proper placement of certain modal/auxiliary characters such as 倒,却,且.

Learning Review Process

The review that it provides is pretty much just surrounding the vocabulary. They do have parts where you’re supposed to read out the sentences for speaking practice, but I don’t like doing those exercises, mostly because of how awkward it us, but also because of how buggy it tends to be.

I guess for speaking and grammar you could just go back and redo those lessons for practice. For the most part, it’s on you.

Pace

You can go at your own pace. Technically, you can learn as much as you want in a day, but you do have to unlock each successive lesson by completing the current one. Not an issue unless you had one particular lesson you wanted to get to.

Pricing

I think it’s not too expensive. Roughly around the same price as HanziHero, if not a tiny bit more.

Additional Stuff

They also have lessons for food, gaming, science, travel phrasebook, business, manhua, science, computers, movies/books/comics, and even celebrities lol.

Du Chinese

I’ve been paying for Du Chinese for years!! I always get the annual subscription and wait till year-end to get their holiday discounts.

I think I’m finally, for the first time in 6 years, actually buckling up to take it more seriously. Can you believe I’ve been paying for it for this long, and basically only using it twice a year

My problem is that I’m too quick to commit to an app without properly assessing how good it is or if I’m interested enough to use it consistently.

Learning in November

At the start of November, I started getting really tired from work, and I wanted to focus more on HSK 5. So, I stopped learning new items and instead just focused on continuing reviewing on here.

I put my account on vacation mode on November 20th, so about 15 days ago and haven’t reviewed anything since.

I’m definitely in a slump, but I don’t think it’s language-learning burnout, but overall life burnout lol.

Reading

I just came back from a business trip last night. My flight was 5-ish hours. So, I tried to read/listen to some audiobooks in Chinese. When I say “my reading level”, I mean the n+1 approach of language level.

  • 何以笙箫默
    • This is apparently a really popular romance novel that was turned into a TV show. I guess the show is more popular than the book, but I’d never heard of it before last night lol. It’s pretty much exactly at my reading level.
  • 我们仨
    • This one is about the author, her husband, and their daughter. It’s cute and kind of slice-of-life. A bit above my reading level. Plus, there’s a lot of imagery and colloquial figurative language.
  • 鲁迅全集 → 呐喊
    • If you don’t know, Lu Xun is a famous author from the early 1900s. He wrote a lot during the beginning of the revolution (mainland was Republic of China 1912-1949). I actually studied some of his works when I was in college, but it was with his texts translated into English lol. However, his stories are pretty interesting. So, if you want to get a glimpse into what life was like in China during that time, you should check him out. Definitely, the Chinese language level is kind of high for me, but I’m still gonna try to read it.

Btw if you’re trying to get better at reading in Chinese, you should try listening to the audiobook while reading with your eyes simultaneously. There are actually studies that show this can significantly improve your reading skills, even in your native language.

Article: The Effect of Reading While Listening to Audiobooks: Listening Fluency and Vocabulary Gain

students can improve their listening fluency through reading while listening to a large amount of audiobooks, resulting in an effect superior to those receiving formal instruction with more limited input quantity.

HSK 5

I think I’m still in a little bit too much of a slump to try and tackle HSK 5 right now. I’m in this funk where I want to do so much but I can’t get myself to do anything.

My “baby steps” is getting back to at least doing my reviews in HH, and continuing my 1:1 lessons on iTalki.

Other Personal

Travelling

For context, I’m from California.

I went to Big Bear Lake for Thanksgiving! It had snowed a week before we got there. So, there was some snow on the north-facing mountains, but the streets were pretty much cleaned up. Our hotel’s shadows had snow lol. After Big Bear, we drove to Rodeo Drive (Beverly Hills in LA). It was interesting. Felt very touristy. I’ve gone to LA 100 times by now, but I never went by there. If you haven’t been to LA, there’s a saying that “LA is an hour away from LA”. Everything is so so so far apart in not just distance, but time x traffic x looking for parking, etc.

I just flew to the East coast (USA) for work. And wow… there’s really not a lot in the Carolinas. I took a red eye flight to there (horrible), and I took a normal flight back (thank goodness).

Birthday

Tomorrow (December 05) is my birthday! I’m turning 99.

Just kidding, I’m turning 26. Gonna do a joint-birthday dinner and escape room with my friend this weekend. Try a new restaurant, 江南, on Sunday. Next weekend, I’m doing a birthday dinner at 海底捞, and then going to karaoke with my coworkers.

I think some consolidation time is very underrated. Always striving to cram new stuff in forever is such a drain - once or twice a year just being super chill about your study, and just maintaining what you got until the motivation to progress returns always seems to work out well for me in the long run.

Thank you @Adri @Alufi and @kaysik !!

1000%. Language learning “gurus” and teachers basically insist on practicing every day, but they’re typically including learning more, practicing output, etc. Sometimes you just don’t have it in you to do it

Interestingly, I’ve definitely felt that “consolidation” aspect where, when I take a break from a language, I actually discover / understand more about something I’d learned previously, or even passively realize a pattern in the language.

I’ll have to go back and find it, but there’s this thing when it comes to learning where, if you’re feeling stuck one day, if you let yourself almost fall asleep, and immediately resume studying, you’re likely to understand things better. It’s related to how our brains require sleep to tie things together. I’m mostly referring to this video: Tina Huang - Learn To Learn In 25 Minutes

1:1 Lessons

So, I use iTalki for 1:1 lessons for Chinese. Even though my bf is Chinese, we just don’t practice ever lol. I’ve decided with my teacher to just read books with her, turning it into more or less a “book club” with just me and her, and we’ll discuss the chapter(s) we’ve read in our class. We’re going with 活着 which is the book I mentioned in my very first post in this thread over a year ago lol. Having a class as a reason to read in Chinese is probably the way I’ll be proceeding for a while lol.

Du Chinese

I did already pay for a 1-year subscription a few weeks ago, but I’m gonna try to get a prorated refund. I love Du Chinese, but I am gonna be reading “actual” books now. Also, given how rarely I’ve used it for the last several years, it’s just not worth it for me, unfortunately

HSK

HSK 3.0 (The “new” HSK)

Context: HSK 3.0 here doesn’t mean the HSK (level) 3 exam. The HSK version that most of us have taken in the last 15 years has been the HSK 2.0, released in 2010. The HSK 3.0 was “conceptualized” in 2021 but with no exact target implementation date.

I’ve kind of heard about the new HSK here and there, but there didn’t seem to be a lot of confirmation about when, where, what, how, etc. However, the most recent bit of info I got is that it is going to be implemented (at least for HSK 5) as of July 2026.

Generally speaking, it is supposed to be a lot more involved in terms of practical usage of words, characters, phrases, etc. So, technically harder. I saw that for HSK 3, the vocab list has doubled in size, but I didn’t see what the differences are for HSK 5, but I imagine it’s a huge jump from what it used to be.

Chinese Zero to Hero

I’m trying out yet another learning resource!! I already purchased it. So, I better see it through. They have a lot of videos on YouTube for free, but it’s not their entire set of videos. However, since they offer so many of their videos on YouTube, I recommend checking them out.

Their learning course seems really robust. I’m hoping it’ll be worth it. However, and understandably, they teaching using the HSK standard textbooks, but given the looming HSK 3.0 on the horizon, I’m wondering if they’ll adjust their curriculum? All of their videos are based on the HSK standard textbook (granted, with a lot of their own original content and teaching structure).

Du Chinese

I got a full refund!! I had paid for a 1-year subscription at the beginning of December, but kind of gave up hope that I’d finally start using it seriously. So, I’m moving on lol.

I still 100% recommend Du Chinese to anyone learning Chinese. I’m just not committed enough.

No new characters since previous update :snail:

Still “consolidating”.

HSK

New HSK 3.0

Note: the 3.0 does not mean the HSK 3, the 3.0 is the new format of the HSK set to be implemented this year in July for all HSK levels (1-9).

So, I found out about two weeks ago that the new HSK format (new format 3.0) will be slowly implemented throughout this year, and fully implemented across all levels by July.

I reached out to a teacher that I know who’s somewhat a part of that organization, and asked her about any tips for changes for this year. What she found out is that I could mostly just find the differences in vocabulary sets online by the official websites.

Doing a deeper dive online, I found that each HSK level will essentially be looking for much much more vocabulary and grammar points. It seems like there isn’t a huge difference in terms of test format, but supposedly the new format will have a significant difference in “approach”. It’s supposed to be aimed at “practical usage” of the language as opposed to memorizing vocab lists and grammar. I don’t really understand the difference tbh.

One other addition that I find low key pointless beyond HSK 3 or even HSK 2 is a “syllables” section. I’m assuming it’ll be listening and you select the correct pinyin for the syllable, or you pick the correct pinyin for certain words. Either way, seems kind of redundant when you’re already at an HSK 3 level.

I haven’t taken the HSK 1 or 2, so I wouldn’t really know, but I just found out that you basically hardly needed to know any characters for those levels? That’s changing though, with greater requirements.

What to Study(?)

Honestly, I’m at a loss for what to study. On one hand, since the new format won’t be fully implemented till July, I could take advantage, and take the HSK 5 by June. On the other hand, I want to push myself and get closer to real fluency and knowing, so I should probably study for the new HSK 5. The problem, however, is that it’s basically like studying for the previous HSK 6 (sort of). So, really, I’m studying 2 levels above my current achievement. Not a bad thing, just a lot more work than what I had originally planned.

Additionally, I think many of us are familiar with the HSK Standard textbooks and workbooks (which you can find all for free + audio here: HSK Books (Levels 1-6)), but currently, the new textbooks are announced, but with no planned release date :face_with_medical_mask: . Personally, I detest teasing like this. Don’t let us know about this stuff until you have everything prepared!! The anticipation with zero clarity is more agonizing than the studying itself.

AI: DeepSeek

I’m not against using AI, I’m against people generating images/videos of dropping poop bombs on their opponents in the name of a gag.

Suggestion for our learners!! When you’re done with your review, copy the entire list of vocabulary and characters (right and wrong, or just wrong), and go to DeepSeek and ask:

Please write a story using all of the following vocabulary at an HSK [#] level: [paste list].

This may help with having the meaning of the vocab stick in context. Since DeepSeek is developed by China, I’m sure it’s a lot likely to generate sentences that are more natural or contextually accurate.

Today’s Example:

Can you write me a story at an HSK 5 level using all of the following vocabulary:

So, in the end, it incorporated almost all of the vocabulary, and I got an interesting story out of it lol.

Would it be crazy if I just violently speed ran the remaining characters (40/day) to finish off the curriculum?

HSK

So, I’m still studying for the HSK 5 as though there isn’t a new exam format coming this year. Essentially HSK 1-4 is about being able to use standard, day-to-day Chinese, and HSK 5-6 is more “formal”.

Honestly, HSK 5 content is beating my a** :face_with_medical_mask:. It’s not the individual vocabulary, but it’s really the structure of the sentences. It’s already the fact that the content is more formal - like traditions, holidays, geography, etc - but quite literally the phrasing that isn’t used in colloquial speech.

Textbook

I found out that the HSK 1 textbook for the new HSK 3.0 is already on sale. No clear date on it’s availability for purchase. HSK 2 and HSK 3 will be available in March, but no announcement for HSK 5-9 yet.

I’m also thinking if, when the new HSK 4 and 5 books are ready.. if I should just study for the new HSK 4 again, given that it’s harder than before. Like, let’s say I feel pretty well prepared for the current HSK 5, the new HSK 5 will be harder than what I would’ve prepared up to that point. I guess I don’t mind just spending even more time to prepare for the new HSK 5.

I know people say you should “find community” for language learning, but having online partners is not the same as meeting, learning, and practicing in person. And then, meeting people in person just feels really uncomfortable (for me) at this age, especially since the only people I meet are through work at this point. Even then, I work remote 99% of the time. So, it’s not like I’m getting the in-person practice of facing someone LOL.

Travel

I’m applying for a tourist visa for China right now! Idk why I’m so stressed that I’ll get rejected. I’m going to see a few of my friends in various places across 3 weeks.

I’m planning on going to:

  • Beijing
    • with a side trip to Datong
  • Shanghai
    • with a side trip to Hangzhou
  • Guangzhou
    • no side trip planned (yet)
