LIES!

Just realized I wasn’t looking at the counts correctly, so my learned, skipped category is -10 from what I’ve been reporting. NOW it’s accurate.

Vacation Mode

Sad, I’m definitely gonna have to pause learning for a bit because I have a conference that’s basically taking up all of next week so I can’t start learning something now, just to not be able to review for essentially 11 days. So, maybe this will be a nice time to start slimming down the review amounts? I’ll still be having tons of reviews on a day-by-day basis, but maybe I can do some in my free time. If not, then oh well. So, I’ll probably just go on vacation mode.

Speaking of which, I usually just turn on vacation mode Friday afternoon, and resume Monday morning. I condense my learning to Monday-Thursday (at 40-60 items per day) so I at least get a good chunk of learning in every week.

Reading and speaking (with my partner)

So, I made another post talking about some resources for books and stuff, which I’m quoting at the bottom here.

However, I’ve finally started reading 活着 and it’s going relatively well! I guess the software I used to analyze words I needed to learn didn’t catch everything. So, while I’m reading, I’m still highlighting and add a bunch of words to My Dictionary.

A compromise I’ve essentially made with my partner is that I read 活着 out loud to him. This is good because

  1. I get speaking practice (sort of)
  2. I’m forcing myself to actually pronounce words that I’ve been learning
  3. He catches the words I’m saying wrong because they’re duoyinzi or because they’re rare enough that I can’t find them in the Dictionary on here
  4. I get to practice building the natural(ish) tone of reading stories

I mentioned the free books because the show The First Frost is said to be a good show and an even better novel. I just can’t get through even the third episode!! It’s definitely a slow build type of show, but I guess I just don’t enjoy the cold and indifferent versus the one wondering ‘what if’ trope. I’m gonna try to push through.

Anyway!! I found the book for free online. I was not about to spend $25 USD to order it when I KNOW real well that people overseas are getting it for less than $5.

Continuing With Characters

So, I had my learning word limit at 40 words a day and my dictionary item limit to 20 a day. About last week, I set my word learning limit to 27 thinking my learning queue for the day was gonna be 27 items max. Apparently it mean 27 literal words within my 40 item queue lol. My bad! So, I set the word limit to 27 items per day + 5 items max from my dictionary. So I should be learning about 13 characters per day..? Maybe I should adjust my learning cap to like.. 30 items lol

Reading

While I am making progress with 活着, I do have to stop here and there and note even more words that I don’t know because the software didn’t catch everything. That’s fine, I don’t really know if I used the software correctly or not lol. I haven’t bought the full license yet (it’s like $16 USD so super cheap), but I’m considering it. I have started to read another book called 我们仨 by 杨绛 (Yang Jiang) and I really like the author’s tone. I recommend this one to anyone who’s around an HSK 5+ level.

Also! This book called “Chinese Folktales for Language Learners” is great for learning more story-related vocabulary. There’s a similar book by the same authors called Chinese Stories for Language Learners. I also recommend these two.

This second one (stories) has 22 stories that are the origins of classic Chinese proverbs. Again, this is for learners so these two books are good for like HSK4+ level. I think you could take a stab at it if you’re at HSK3!

Music and 歌手 2025

Been taking a deep dive with Sandy Lam 林忆莲 and Tia Ray 袁娅维 lately. Vocals >>>>>>>>>

歌手: op-ed, don’t come at me

Y’all.. this season has been pissing me off lol. 单依纯 is super talented and totally deserves her wins. But they’re getting rid of GOOD, DIVERSE TALENT and keeping in… like not as great talent? Idk how to describe it. The decisions are just not great.

Also, they incorporate online votes which is okay… until people blindly vote for their biases (马嘉祺, 陈楚生). And I can get how 白举纲 isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but at least he can DELIVER! They got rid of him after Charlie Puth came on as a challenger and 单依纯 didn’t win against him. CHARLIE DIDN’T EVEN STAY ON THE SHOW! So exasperating.

The progress has been somewhat slow lately. Work has been crazy

HSK 4 In August

I’ve finally signed up for the HSK exam. It’ll be my first time taking one. I’m excited but also scared because now I actually have to study for real. I was originally aiming to take the HSK 5, but I’m struggling with the listening even at HSK 4. I technically have the vocabulary for HSK 5, but I’m not super well practiced in terms of the vocabulary and grammar, more specifically in the realm of listening, speaking, and writing.

General Learning

It’s really hard to pick a good study path for myself since my Chinese level is so varied depending on the context. I looked into some language schools in my region, but they either 1) only take kids 18 or younger, or 2) the only cover like one textbook chapter over EIGHT WEEKS. I was eating up my Chinese textbooks roughly one chapter per week when I was in undergrad. Now, I’m really really leaning on my boyfriend to help me get ready lol.

I just need to take mock exams and actually practice PHYSICALLY writing Chinese. Probably gonna work a lot with ChatGPT and DeepSeek to correct my sentences and make them more natural, hopefully I can practice them enough to make it natural for myself.

Not much of an update! I haven’t learned any new terms since July 1. I’ve been focusing more on studying for the HSK4 exam which is next Saturday.

I’ve been only reviewing a few items per day because I’m so behind.

The app SuperTest has been actually pretty great for studying. Only downside is that if you want to practice the speaking exam (which is required if you’re not in China (which you also have to pay for separately for whatever reason)), you have to pay for their premium subscription (very Rivermind of them).

HSK 4

I took the HSK 4 on Sunday, and it was the first HSK I’ve ever done. I also signed up for the HSKK Intermediate, which, online, I swear it says that it’s a requirement if you’re taking HSK 4, but I ended up being the only one who took it?? Lol.

But the teacher was suggesting to me to join some sort of speech competition (which is insane considering how terribly I feel that I did on the speaking exam lmao), but I’m also crazy for considering it…

Studying

SuperTest for the HSK

I absolutely 100% recommend SuperTest. Great app, uses previous exams as learning material, there’s even a “path” option in parallel to your picking and choosing of learning. Unfortunately, it is paid, but if you’re cramming, and using it at least 3 days a week, I think it’s totally worth it. At the very least, it gets you used to the feeling of the exam, so that you’re more prepared for taking the actual exam. BONUS! It comes with tons of mock exams AND tons of previous exams that you can use as practice.

8/10. -2 because the website version doesn’t have the “path” version, but still an excellent app.

Falou for “speaking”

I still don’t really like this app that much. It’s still good for getting your mouth used to saying relatively realistic sentences that you may not normally think to say (NOT in the same way that Duolingo has you saying “My cousin only plays piano on the pier on Saturdays”).

5/10. -5 because it’s relatively buggy. I also get suspicious when an app support more than 10 languages, because at that point, I think they’re just relying on AI to fill out the content. Ling supports like 80+ languages, but I think Ling is great for getting off the ground with a new language. It boosted my Cantonese when I was starting.

LingQ for listening and reading

I had a discussion here with you guys about LingQ. The overall comments I heard were that there’s not a ton of Mandarin content, and that you pretty much have to add a lot of your own content through links or files.

Personally, I actually really like that you build up your personal lexicon that you can see, and that it’s being used as a point of reference for unvisited videos! Sure, maybe it’s a little bit lame that you’d have to find your own videos to link back into the app, but I see LingQ as more of a tool as opposed to being a full-on teaching app.

I don’t like that the videos have to have subtitles already.

I do like that you can import any text (as opposed to videos!) and it’ll still help you with building up your lexicon.

Mixed feelings on choosing your own definition for vocabulary.

7/10. -3 because for Mandarin you do have to find a good amount of your own content if you’re HSK3+, and the videos need to already have subtitles.

LingoDeer

I loved this app when I was getting start with Mandarin!! To be fair, I haven’t used it heavily since 2018. So, I don’t know if it has changed too much since then. I think also because I got the app before it had subscriptions (when it only offered Chinese, Japanese, and Korean), I somehow lucked out and don’t have to pay a subscription today?

It is VERY slow paced BUT it really gets you to understand the grammatical structure of the sentences. I’d say this app is more focused on grammar and structure as opposed to vocabulary (though you still learn a great amount of foundational vocabulary).

One other major bonus about this app that Duolingo USED TO have is a notes section that is actually like a page out of a textbook, that simply explains how the grammar is used, and maybe adds in a cultural note or two.

7/10. -3 because it’s slow-paced, and the vocabulary is a tiny bit lacking. Overall, still love this app. It helped me skip two intro quarters of Mandarin when I was in college, so that has to count for something!

Sorry if you explained earlier and I missed it but out of curiosity what type of characters are the skipping? Just things you don’t think you’ll use? Or stuff you’re actively putting off until later? The skipping because you already learned them makes sense (guessing it’s just full of 我,你,是 etc), but the other few hundred?

(PS. I don’t always have anything to reply with but I do always appreciate your posts - makes me feel like I’m not alone in the grind haha. Looking forward to hearing about your HSK4 results!)

No worries at all! I don’t think I got to explain the table before.

My background with Chinese is a bit mixed. I self-studied Japanese from 2015 to 2018 and learned around 800 Kanji. While Japanese and Chinese are different, that experience helped me get a head start with Chinese in 2018, especially since many meanings overlap and I could loosely map pronunciations.

I studied Chinese in undergrad from 2018 to 2022 (with a one-year break due to COVID). During that time, we covered roughly 2500 characters - though I’d say I actively learned about 1800. The rest I picked up through readings and media exposure. After graduating in 2022, I paused my Chinese studies for about a year, and my skills declined a bit.

Now that I’m using HanziHero, I’m selective about which characters I skip. I don’t skip every character I “know” - instead, I ask myself:

  1. Can I write it by hand from memory?
  2. Can I name at least two words that use it?
  3. Do I consistently know how to pronounce it?

Since I’m now immersed in Chinese media (Xiaohongshu, Weibo, Bilibili, texts, 1:1 lessons, conversations with my partner, etc.), I feel confident skipping characters that meet those criteria.

For the 858 characters I’ve skipped without learning them, I’m at least 95% confident in recognizing and using them. The 67 “learned but later skipped” characters were either ones I initially wanted to review but later felt comfortable with, or ones whose definitions or pronunciations in HanziHero didn’t feel useful or relevant to how I encounter them in real life.

I TOTALLY FEEL THIS!! I’m in the same boat, I appreciate seeing your posts and other folks’ posts. I’m usually so tired, or I don’t have much to contribute, but ditto on the “not feeling alone” aspect lol

HSK 4 & HSKK Intermediate

I passed!

Reading, writing, listening, I got a super high score.

Speaking, I barely passed, with a 67/100 lol.

I technically still have some material to learn/review for HSK4, but I’ll start studying for HSK5

Guest Speaker

While I took the HSK speaking exam, I was literally the only person there LOL and the person who was recording was a Chinese teacher of that school. After the exam, we got to talk for a while. Since then, she’s asked me to come and speak to her students about my Chinese learning journey, how it applies to my life, how it could apply to their life, and maybe give them an interactive portion.

So, I’m planning on showing them HanziHero :joy: I genuinely think it’s super useful for folks that maybe aren’t spending the time to write too much by hand, or aren’t learning Chinese the formal way (stroke names, radical names and meanings, etc.).

I’m just nervous, because I feel like the teacher has definitely overestimated my Chinese ability. However, it feels nice to be asked to do something like this. As I’m 25 going on 26, I literally do not know what talking to high schoolers is going to be like. I don’t interact with anyone under the age of 23 :joy:

Interesting that speaking was weakest since you mention a Chinese partner. Would’ve guessed the opposite. Either way very cool you passed - I hear HSK5 is where all the fun starts, good luck :+1:

My Dictionary Items

So, it seems like I can’t really delete dictionary items.

Since its release back in December 2024, I’ve added so many dictionary words; and as of today, I’ve finally cleared my long-lasting queue. There definitely will be more in the future but let’s look at where we’re at right now.

Unskipped Skipped Total
Learned 709 268 977
Non-learned - 35 -
Total - 303 -

Total: 1,012 items covered via dictionary.

There are four reasons why I end up skipping so many dictionary words.

  1. I get the meaning or pronunciation wrong so so so many times.
    • Side note, the sample sentences that HH provides in their core curriculum does make a huge difference when learning words. That’s pretty much the only thing lacking in the dictionary aspect.
  2. The word is rare enough to where I’m not really sure if I need to keep reviewing it.
    • Again, sample sentences would at least help it stick. A lot of times, I don’t remember from where I found these words in the first place lol.
  3. The dictionary word originally didn’t exist in the HH core curriculum, but later did get added. So, I’d rather learn it from the core curriculum.
  4. Because the dictionary is LIFO (last in, first out), the words that I added yesterday will come to my lesson queue today, and words that I added a month ago may not come into my lesson queue for another few weeks. So, by my other studies (watching shows, practicing with my partner, studying for HSK, etc.), I end up acquiring or learning the word well enough to where I don’t feel like I even need to learn or review it anymore.

I cannot begin to explain how much of a relief it is to have gotten through all of these items. It’s a similar feeling to clearing a review backlog with over 400 items.

Speaking

Thank you!! And yes, you would think having a native-Chinese partner, we’d be practicing a lot lol. We both feel like strangers when we speak in Chinese because we met each other and started dating fully in English. Lately, we’ve been trying a little bit more though

“Cultural frame shifting” and “lack of a shared norm” is basically when, you know someone and you’ve established your interactions and relationship, but then suddenly you switch to another language that you did not use to establish a relationship with said person. Some linguists say that using a different language is like shifting into a different personality. This is pretty likely since using a different language technically activates slightly different pathways in the brain, which could, as a side effect, bring up behaviors that are associated with using that different language.

As for the HSKK, I literally did not practice at all until the night before. He was helping me look at prompt of previous HSKK prompts, and having me record my answers with the actual allotted time. It was rough!!

He had to take the TOEFL before coming here for school, so he gave me some pointers for the speaking. Generally, he said it’s best to have a bank of stories, information, and opinions prepared and well-rehearsed before going into the exam. It’s pretty much like preparing for a job interview lmfao.

Completion.. and unskipping

I didn’t even realize I completed the HSK6 characters until last night. Which is kind of funny because I’m only just now starting to study for HSK5 lol. It still feels nice though. I’ve been on #aggressiveMode with learning lately because I really slowed down while I was studying for HSK4, pretty much only doing reviews and not learning new words/characters in order to lessen the review amounts per day.

I’ve mentioned before that I skip certain characters and words where I feel comfortable enough. But sometimes, a new word comes up, and there’ll be a character in it where I take an extra half-second to read, and it happens to be a character that I’d previously skipped. So, now that I’m getting into the latter half of HanziHero, I’ll probably start unskipping some of those characters/words that aren’t 100% familiar.

Guest Speaker: Continued

The guest speaking event I mentioned previously is coming up this Friday! And I haven’t prepared anything yet  I need to get on that today, and start rehearsing what I’m going to say.
