Hi
I noticed that the the upcoming reviews box increases, when I do more reviews.
Could somebody explain how this works? From my understanding “upcoming reviews” only counts the new items that are scheduled for review.
If i do more reviews today, why would the upcoming reviews for tomorrow increase instead of decrease? I would assume that if I do more reviews today, then tomorrow there will be less new items for tomorrow.
Thanks

I’m no expert but I think this is kind of how it works:
- Each “item” (word, character, component) has a level and a “Next Review” timer that starts when the item’s level is changed (promoted or demoted)
- “Upcoming Reviews” shows the sum of all items whose “Next Review” timer happens to expire on that day (causing the item to show up in your reviews for that day)
So the following occurs on a regular basis from my experience:
Initial Situation
- 100 Reviews Today
- 80 Reviews Expected for Tomorrow
I complete all 100 reviews for the day (and perhaps lessons)
Final Situation
- 0 Reviews Today
- 100 Reviews Expected for Tomorrow
This occurs because in the process of promoting items that you have just recently learned (or demoting them) you reset their “Next Review” timers. Many of these timers will take a long time to fall due and impact your review numbers. That being said, items that are freshly learned (low-level) may be reviewed in the very near future (tomorrow or next few days).
That’s how doing today’s reviews can increase the reviews that predicted for the near future.
Does that make sense?

thanks a lot, this helps.
I didn’t know that there was an interaction between the demoting/promoting and the expected reviews.
