Would it be possible to add a function that lets users add visually similar characters manually, similar to the way we can add alternative meanings?
The more characters I learn, the more often I find myself thinking like “Hey, that character looks similar to the one from the other day!”. I understand from a different post in this community that there is no simple solution to this feature due to lack of data, but I wonder if a function to add them manually might be an option. Perhaps after a while you might even have your own crowd sourced dataset, based on the visually similar characters added by different users.
Anyway, love the app, thanks for working hard so it constantly keeps getting better and better!
I’m trying to think if there are any official lists of characters that look similar to English speakers. LTL does a good write up about similar characters but it isn’t exactly official or really extensive. https://ltl-beijing.com/similar-chinese-characters/. I also realize that this list will be different for traditional and simplified.
I can attest that I had trouble with 辛 and 幸 and I’ve had issues before with 牛 and 午. When I make a mistake I can tell I’ve confused it with another word, but that other word isn’t always obvious, it took me about a week to figure out I was confusing 午 for 牛 - but only a day for 辛 and 幸 since I had them in my same set of cards.
Re-learning a character so I don’t mix it up isn’t so hard. “幸 has soil ontop”. etc. But if there was a simple way to link the two characters that would be amazing.
