Skipping Over Words vs. Not, That Have Only Skipped Chars

So, at the moment, to speed up my character learning journey, I’ve pretty much only been operating on “skip over words that contain only skipped characters”.

However, if I were to switch it to “no preference”, which I’ve done once before, I know I’ll be essentially in a “catch up” state (more or less) for a while, but will it be teaching me words in the order as they appear in the words list, or will it be randomised? Like, would I be learning words in the order of the characters that I’ve learned, or would it take all of the words that I haven’t learned yet, and randomise them for the lesson queue?

Good question! The answer is that they’ll appear roughly in the same order as listed.

You’ll go through all of the HSK-1 fully-skipped words, then HSK-2, etc. Within each HSK band, the next word selected is determined by the characters within it. That is:

  • Are the characters within this word already “covered” by previously learned words
  • Of the characters within this word, what’s the ratio of words learned to characters (so we can select ones with less “word coverage”)

You can read more about the selection process here

Note: the word list page, using the “Lesson Order” sort, is a rough approximation of the word ordering, before prioritization and skipping is applied. This is to keep consistency, but I do think it causes some confusion, especially if some words are left unlearned
