Sascwatch Study Log

July 8th- I wanted to contribute a post here to give myself and possibly others motivation in their journey. I am starting on a whim from basically knowing nothing on June 29th, so I am very curious and excited to see how I end up if I keep consistency and discipline.

I started learning because I’ve always had a hunger for knowledge but never acted on it and that’s frustrated me. (Also want to stay away from mindless activities like doomscrolling). I’ve also been waiting for a call on work, so I’ve had too much free time, so my boredom really helped kickstart this journey.

I’m really cracking down on myself to stay disciplined, so I’ve made the goal of not missing a day for the rest of this year. Obviously, this is pretty tough, but I am determined. I’ve now set my item limit to 30 and am prepared to do my best.

Hanzi Hero;
So far, I’m already impressed. In ten days, I’m feeling great, have learned a large quantity of items, and have already seen characters in texts which is such a motivator. This community section has also helped as I’ve seen the great achievements of others. So far, I don’t have any complaints to Hanzihero and am instead very grateful to the creators who made this opportunity possible.

Struggles;
My largest struggle is the pronunciation portion for characters. I can remember sounds, components, characters and words meanings well but can fall off for pronunciations. This isn’t a massive problem as I believe it’s because of the starting stages of remembering the mnemonics.

I hope to post once every month to show my progression.

Best,
Alex

Great start! All the best with your Chinese journey!

Do your best to stick with it daily, but don’t be hard on yourself if you miss a day or if you’re only able to do the reviews but not the lessons. If you’re able to do lessons for 90% of the remaining year instead of all of it, you’ll still have learned hundreds of components and characters :slight_smile:

Sometimes life gets in the way. I personally try to have no zero days, meaning that I’ll try to learn at least one character or do some/all of my reviews, so some progress is made every day. But I’ve gone on vacation or have had days when Chinese couldn’t be the priority. That’s fine. What matters is not getting discouraged and starting the learning habit again.
