Cap on daily new items should be removed or at least increased to like 50. I think it’s pretty shady business to lock users into a certain pace with the reason being not wanting users to burnout when thats a very subjective matter. I’ve been interested in buying a subscription for a while but for me personally 20 a day is not gonna cut it and I cannot pay nearly 400 euros to unlock it. Just way too slow of a pace.
It’s been discussed a lot but the number or customers lost to the lowish limit is almost certainly less than the number of customers lost because of backlog build-up even WITH the limit in place (just look at the post history - there are more “too many cards” type comments than “limit is too low” comments).
Have you used and SRS system before? Since your queue will grow to a size that’s around 7-10x your new cards a day and slowly creep up from there it’s easy to get burried. It’s one of those things that feels dumb at the start, but really does bit you in the ass if you’re not super careful a month down the line and then you’re screwed because you can’t keep up.
With 20 a day, you’re daily backlog will end up hitting +200. Now you’re expected to get around 15% of those wrong so that’s 250 cards a day minimum (200 + 30-50 repeats of failed cards + 20 new cards). Even if you’re 100% locked in and doing cards pretty fast that still probably over an hour of HH a day. At that point it’s more worth your while to go do other types of study (watch some CI, read DuChinese etc) rather than hammering character reviews harder.
Your not alone though, others definitely want higher limits, but it’s been years and they haven’t increased it. I’d give it a few weeks and see if you still want to go harder though, might find out the limit isn’t actually that bad once your backlog builds up!
Hi! We do have “Jump Start” mode for users wanting to try out the system more, up to 40 lessons a day. It’s for anyone under rank 3 or has a lifetime subscription.
And yeah, we can look into adjusting the pace beyond that
we haven’t really given it much thought after introducing Jump Start mode. We have thought of increasing the “Jump Start” max limit beyond 40 lessons. I would agree with @kaysik that HanziHero is more of something one would want to do in the background as one makes progress into graded readers or other learning systems/modules, but I get it can be frustrating to be limited to 20 lessons when you feel more than ready to learn hundreds more and you’re just trying to do what you feel is best for your learning.
In any case, I hope Jump Start helps for now. Thanks for the feedback!
i understand that you dont want hanzihero to be a main activity, i fully agree. but im currently doing a listening-only approach (at 6.3 hrs avg per day that will be soon) until i hit 1.5k hours, so in the meantime i want to get used to the characters. frankly this is the resource that seems to suit me the best. i would really appreciate if you could ship out a higher limit asap or atleast make it available for yearly subscriptions. id purchase a yearly subscription right away.
I’d be impressed if someone could learn 50 new items a day into perpetuity. very impressed. lol, tht’d be a like 1000 reviews every day after 3 months
50 a day is like 350-500 cards max, about 30 minutes of reviewing but putting that aside, ive been doing 60 a day on anki for 3 years now spread between korean and russian. for me its really not that big of a deal, 1 long session in the morning then smaller sessions throughout the day if i didnt manage to finish it in the morning
if you did 60 new characters a day, you be reviewing every single character on this website within 53 days. the SRS algo would be something to see, assuming you get all of your reviews correct. that would be awesome. I wish I could cover every single level of the HSK program in 53 days ![]()
