It’s in the deck as jiang4, ‘a general’. The actual HSK3 word that someone would want to learn is jiang1, “be about to”. This should probably be changed, along with the words that were added to reinforce this hanzi. (So, ‘mahjong’ and ‘veteran’ swapped for something that actually uses jiang1.)
In retrospect, this is not the first time that this happened. I was too new to realize this when I first saw them, but 还 and 会 should probably also be introduced by their more important and frequent usages, the ones that are the reason why they’re in HSK1. It’s just more undeniable with 将.
What default meaning/pronunciation they pick for a character comes up semi frequently. Look here’s me asking the same question about 还 in July last year:
Go read it for their full response, however the short version is that the HH team pick the definition that has the most words associated with it. Then you can get the alternate meanings/pronunciations outside HH.
Personally I’d rather they teach the common meaning by default, then just allow words which use the alternate character meaning. Could point out in notes or in the pneumonic that it’s using the alternate meaning. But for what it’s worth it wasn’t a huge deal long term - just slightly annoying short term.
Honestly I think using HH as a primary source of new words is actually the bigger issue. Personally I’ve found it much better to learn things in context, then come to HH and add it, rather than learning random new things in HH then never seeing them out in the wild. Those random only in HH chars/words just don’t really stick for me.
