I currently have around 1,680 reviews pending…My question is: is it possible for Hanzi Hero to prioritize “new” words and characters in reviews, instead of older ones?
Right now I am focusing on learning new vocabulary, but I still want to review older material eventually. Ideally, I’d like new words to appear first in my review sessions, with older ones coming later.
Is there a setting or option that allows reviews to be ordered this way?
Best I can suggest is just chip away at the reviews. If you can manage +100 extra reviews a day your queue will be gone in 2 weeks and then this isn’t a problem. But until then, HH doesn’t have that many settings so pretty sure you’re out of luck.
Yeah, there isn’t really a setting to fix this at the moment But I don’t see why we couldn’t add one. I foresee a simple setting like “Review Priority” with options like:
Oldest first
Newest first
Are there any other “priorities” or “ordering” other than that? We do support ordering the review by item type already, so I can’t think of anything else at the moment it needs a better name too
Easiest cards first (Descending Retrievability). I’m not sure how that would translate to SM-2 in HH terms, but that’s what the FSRS people have tested and found works best for large backlogs. The idea is to stop cards becoming leeches by keeping up with the cards you’re expected to get right. The cards you’re likely to fail you can put them off because they’re already messed up, being more messed up doesn’t matter. Would you rather see 10 good cards so they don’t turn into forgotten cards? Or spend those 10 reviews repeatability failing an existing leech card potentially forgetting other card for your time?
If you have no backlog it doesn’t matter, and if you have a big backlog trying to clear it by smashing out all the easy cards quickly is much more time efficient than doing difficult cards first.
These are now all implemented. You can check out the updated docs on Item Review Order.
For the “easiest first”, even though we don’t have the specific FSRS parameters, I tried approximating it by looking at the scheduled review time against the actual time that passed since the last review. Basically seeing how “overdue” the item is compared to its current SRS stage.
The less overdue an item is relative to its scheduled time, theoretically the easier it will be. FSRS has more parameters to more accurately chart out what is easier and harder, but hopefully this setting can help by approximation
