New user trying to understand the difference between setting options

Hi,
I am a new user (first day) trying to understand the difference between the following SRS setting options.

  • Lesson batch size - I set this to 6 but I only saw 5 components and 4 characters today. So I am a bit lost as to what ‘batch size’ really represents.
  • Daily lesson limit - it seems to be set to 15, after some thinking I realized that I had done 10 sounds and 5 components which does add up to 15. So I suppose a lesson is a combination of sounds and components but perhaps isn’t directly related to the number of characters you get to learn per day.
  • My word limit is 10, but I haven’t learned any new words today. So not sure how that setting is working.
  • Daily dictionary limit -I am not sure what a ‘dictionary limit’ is and how it’s different from a word limit.
  • Daily review limit - I assume this is reviewing content I already know. But is that placing a limit on words, sounds, characters, components or all of the above?

My main question at this point is how do I calibrate the number of characters I will get to learn in each particular day? I was thinking perhaps 3 to 5 characters to start with.

It would be nice to clarfy these concepts in the settings section.

Also as a further feature request, on some days I do have a bit more motivation, it would be nice to be able to throw in an extra 4 or 5 characters to review on a one time basis. I guess by the principles of SRS that would increase the number of reviews I would have to do on the following days.

To clarify a lesson is where you learn one ‘item’. There are 4/5 different kinds of items in hanzihero - sounds, components, characters, hanzihero words, and optionally, custom dictionary words.
Lesson batch size is how many lessons you do before the ‘quiz’ during lessons. It’s not a super impactful setting.
Daily lesson limit is the important one - how many lessons do you get per day.
Words are only unlocked when you have learned the characters that compose them, and are familiar with them (have the characters at Novice 2). So you had no words because you haven’t learned enough characters yet.
Daily dictionary limit - if you enable the dictionary beta, you can add custom words from the dictionary as items. They have a separate limit from normal lessons, so you can choose how many of them you learn per day. For example if your normal lesson limit is 10 and your dictionary limit is 10, you can learn up to 20 things a day.

Daily review limit - a Review is when you test your knowledge of an item. You review sounds, components, characters, words, and dictionary items, and the review limit will limit how many of those you can do a day. Generally, this setting shouldn’t come up, because if you have more reviews a day than you can reasonably do, you should lower your lesson limit, not your review limit.

There is no way to set a ‘maximum characters’ different from your daily lesson limit, because you may have no words available to take up lesson slots. Your daily word limit does let you ensure that there are always characters in a day’s batch of lessons. For instance, I have 10 lessons daily with a word limit of 7. So at least 3 lesson slots get devoted to characters (or components/sounds but those are very rare after a while).
