So while working with the updated HSK3.0 2025 word list I figured I could pretty easily compare it to HH curriculum to see what missing. I didn’t do this to dump on HH at all, but just to show me what was missing so I could use the HH dictionary to add them. Once I had the data - simple enough to just share it in-case anyone else wants to see it!
So what’s missing? Well there are 0 missing individual characters. I didn’t look at every character, but all the stand alone characters that are words in their own right (e.g. 我 or 爱) are all covered in HH. All the missing items are multi-character items, what HH considers “words”. This is because HH only teaches a single meaning per character, then only includes multi-character words that match that definition (e.g. 还 is taught as huán - return so 还是 isn’t in the HH list because that uses the hái - also definition of 还 which isn’t taught).
But for the number of words missing? Well it’s 12,161! Which is quite a LOT bigger than I expected, but looking into it, it’s mostly just because of the 2025 HSK combined has soooooo many words (22,900 all up). If you don’t focus on the whole list, but instead only look at the lower levels, then the missing HH words from HSK Bands 1 - 4 is only ~600 missing words combined out of the 3,800 in the HSK list (so about ~15%). They’re also often super obvious if you know the characters (e.g. 这个). Still there are quite a few things in there I’m glad I found and could manually add to my HH list via the dictionary.
