Hi Guys, I’m new here. I figured out how to prioritise words but I can’t don’t the anywhere. My teacher tells me which characters I should learn, so my idea was that I’ll find those words on the website, prioritise them and they will be saved somewhere for me to review. But they nowhere to be found. I don’t really understand how otherwise use this app, it’s just bunch of random words and characters
It’s the 2022 HSK3.0 character list that’s then sorted so it can be learnt efficiently. However most teaching material and classes still run off the older 2012 HSK2.0 material list, so it might not match up with what you’re learning (virtually all HSK2 material is covered inside HSK3, but there is a lot more and the order is different). It’s definitely not random, but also might not match whatever curriculum you’re teacher is following.
The “official” way to use HH is just to slowly work through the official HSK3 character list. Multi-character words are then added to support the characters your learning (the amount of words depends on your settings). Words are only added once you know all the characters (e.g. You wont get 你好 in your list until you’ve learnt both 你 and 好 characters). The more characters you know the more words unlock and get added to your queue. At the core though it’s just a big long list of characters. HH is not setup to teach you to read as such, it’s setup to help you memorise characters!
Learning things in your own order isn’t really supported in the way you’re imagining. Through prioritisation you can get it to mostly work, but it’ll never be a nice custom list like you want. It’ll always be fiddly and annoying.
If all you want to do is learn an an explicit list in order, and want to avoid all the HSK3.0 stuff that HH tries to teach you, you might prefer a different program/app/website.
However if you want to learn everything, and sometimes also want to prioritise characters/words your teacher gives you but aren’t particularly fussy about the exact order or also learning other things then HH can do that:
- When you prioritise a word, it’ll also prioritise everything you need to learn that (e.g new sounds, components, characters etc)
- All those items then jump to the front of your queue, but the rules about when they unlock all still apply (i.e. word won’t get added to lessons before characters are learnt etc etc).
- You do lessons as normal, the sounds/components/characters that were prioritised will show up first in lessons.
- Once you’ve reviewed them a few times so they become “familiar” then the prioritised word will be added to lessons. It could take a while though if you have to learn say 2 characters, 5 components and some sounds - that might take you a few days to a week to get familiar enough that the word using them gets added.
- But while you’re waiting for all the items to become familiar etc HH won’t just stop - it’ll add the next things from it’s own list. So even with heavy use of prioritisation it will still sneak in it’s own stuff now and then.
How much you care about that flow is up to you. It annoys me greatly, but I like he rest of HH so much that I put up with it. And if you’re planning to get to a high level you need to know it all anyway so it’s not useless, it’s just not the worder you might have picked yourself.
Thank you so much for your answer, it all makes sense now:)
