Free alternatives to HanziHero?

This might sound a bit stupid, but I can’t currently afford HH because it’s just way too expensive. I’ve made a lot of progress though and don’t want to lose all that… I don’t really need the mnemonics anymore, I just skip reading them most of the time anyways. I just need some kind of alternative that has a kind of similar curriculum like HH. I usually did 13 new words + 6 Hanzi per day on HH, I know there are Anki decks, but they are just general HSK Decks and seem way too messy. What are my options?

Hey!

Totally get where you’re coming from; not a stupid question.

I don’t have any alternative platforms to share but I’d just bring up that you can come from the monetary side as well. It’s $15ish bucks a month so you’re looking at about one meal out per month’s worth of funds if you’re in the US.

If it’s something important to you, perhaps there are some ways you can alter your spending behavior or pick up a side hustle to support?

Hope this is seen as constructive, don’t mean to come off as anything otherwise.

Good luck and keep studying!!

You could use some flashcard app like Ankidroid, but the drawback is you have to make ur own flash card. It’s really nice if you got used to the app. Given the app is intended to make ur own flashcard, you’re able to add whatever you want

Overall a nice alternative —even the information page of HanziHero have the comparision between HH and Ankidroid.

Ninchanese has a free tier! Some aspects of it get blocked without premium, but I think you can learn a lot while also specifically preparing for HSK by using this platform.

Thx for answering! I ended up buying another month again🥲. I want to at least finish HSK 4 and 5 on HH, and then I might move over to the migaku course (Got Lifetime on sale couple months ago). Migaku is really great for immersion learning, but they still don’t have a hanzi course and I prefer learning hanzi one by one first and then get used to them in immersion. I’m still a student in high school, and I have a side job. But that 15$ mentally hurt everytime😂. Especially because I also have Wanikani for Japanese, but luckily I’m about to finish WK, I could then maybe use that money for HH

Wow, still in highschool!! That’s wonderful.

I can see stacking with Wanikani (I’m doing that as well right now) it could get a bit tight.

Please take it from someone who was once in your position (about 10 years ago) that the $15 bucks a month you’re gunna spend on this will pay you back in dividends over your lifetime.

For cash I would bring a case of sour patch kids to school I got from Smart and Final and sell them. I want to say the box was $19.99 and it came out to $40 after selling them individually? Get creative with it!

Love Hanzi hero too !
But I have to admit the pricing is pretty steep compared to other softwares.
Especially the lifetime. I paid 250$ for Migaku lifetime for example (blackfriday) and it’s a 10+ people team and constant update and features. I would appreciate the lifetime price to reward us for choosing HH in the long run.
Best,

I second this, I work in a HS and we have a kid who is the candy girl, she told me she profits $2000 a year. Not gross, profit!
