Feature request/(maybe bug?): Enable practice session for only sounds, components, characters, or words

My 50-item daily review often consists of more than 50-70% sounds/components. I rarely get words, sometimes can take up to a few days before I get to recall some words. I feel like the balance is not quite accurate here, tho you may know the implementation and can tell why this is the case?

If this behavior is normal, I wonder if we can get a practice ‘sound/component/word/character’ session that will just normally contribute to the score of mastership. That way I want to be able to kind of get rid of the sounds and components in my daily sessions and spend some time on word learning too.

  • What do you think of the proposal
  • Is this word missing from reviews something others also experience, maybe my practice amount is too low? I just did two sessions of 50 items but still no single word in here.

It’s an interesting suggestion, if by “practice session” you mean just a regular Review session  the current way to get around this is to just skip all sounds and components – though that does come with the downside of not reviewing them again or having to unskip them if you do.

If you set the “Review Order” to be in order of sounds, components, characters & words then you’ll get the sounds & components first. A potential fix here is to offer the reverse, e.g. words, characters, components & sounds

To answer this specifically - it’s just because at lower levels there are loads of new sounds. 1 characters has an initial, a final and a tone - so that’s 3 sounds bits for your first character - at the start there are just more sound reviews than words/character reviews. However there just aren’t that many sounds in Mandarin, so once you’ve got all the base set right then there become pretty rare. My graph shows 0 - 50 sounds in the first two months, then 51-70 over the next ~6 months.

If you consistently get them right, they’ll disappear into distant future as their review periods get longer and long. Meanwhile you’ll keep adding new characters/words which will become 99% of your queue. Same with components, they start off being more common than characters, but as you progress they take up a smaller and smaller percentage (although never fully stop like sounds do). Here’s my graph:

The light blue sound bar is a super high % for the first month and now it’s basically nothing.

Thanks for the replies. Maybe my learning rate (30reviews/day) is too low. Tho I get characters that are pretty high level but not words that are still in novice. Just finished the third-day session without a single word in my review. 20/30 tasks were components again just like my other few days. Perhaps it is also due that I just learned a bunch of new characters with maybe 10+ new components over the last two weeks. ANyhows I’ll keep observing maybe your right that it just takes a couple of days to burn through the components and get them higher level.
