Feature Request: Add answer and mark correct

Overall doing my reviews in HH is quite smooth, but one remaining point of friction is how often I provide an answer that’s correct, but not among the alternate answers or synonyms included in the item. Recently I was trying out Maru Mori for Japanese study, and that site has a feature in its reviews that I think would be great in HH: when you’re marked “wrong” in a response, but your answer is actually a correct synonym, there’s an option to “mark correct and add to answers / add to synonyms,” so in a single action it adds your response to the acceptable response list AND marks the answer as actually correct. Very handy!

Great idea, I often run into the same situation!

I’ve thought about this as well, but don’t consider it to be a worthwhile feature for me (definitely can be for some people). I find it better to take the incorrect answer, revise my synonyms on the mnemonic page, and then see it again later. I think this feature could be problematic for a few reasons:

  1. Some users may abuse it to progress items through the SRS system that shouldn’t be progressed.
  2. Can stop users from double checking if their synonym is actually a valid synonym.
  3. The friction is often a great opportunity for deeper learning. I feel like a gain a better understanding of the characters whose mnemonics/synonyms I revise manually.

But overall I totally understand your frustration and feel your pain. It definitely hurts a little more when it’s a character/word that you have a higher SRS stage :sob:

I wonder to what extent the functionality of the website should take into account that users may want to cheat themselves. I feel that, as we are outside of a school setting, this should not carry significant weight. Already, you can nullify wrong answers, and this wouldn’t be fundamentally different. 2 is a fair point but as for 3, I am not so sure. Spaced repetition is meant to be time-efficient and these characters are a bit akin to leeches as far as I am concerned.

For me, I consistently have about 100 items in my reviews, which is right for the learning pace I’m going for, but it also makes getting through my daily reviews a bit time-consuming if I don’t try to “move things along.” Hitting one of the many items that don’t have sufficient synonyms already built in always slows things down, because of the “undo, review and add synonym, move forward and wait for the item to come back” loop.

All that said, I do appreciate that when I’ve genuinely gotten something wrong, it’s nice to have a pause to consider where I made my mistake. But in almost all of these cases, I wasn’t wrong, HH was just stingy with its definition.

Interesting suggestion & opinions on both sides! I’m a little split on it myself. I wonder how this option would surface in the UI

My initial reaction was “Yeah, this definitely streamlines the common case of how synonyms are added,” though I would also have to agree about synonym validity suggested by @cslates05

But yeah, technically this feature can already be achieved with:

I can see an argument with how, if the above is the intention, may as well mark it correct then instead of having to confirm what you already confirmed by typing in the wronged synonym in the first place

We’ve already added the more “controversial” option of undoing your answer, and in some respects this feature request is just extending what the undo already provides
