Feature Idea: Optional Multi Pronunciation

I know it’s been mentioned in a variety of posts on here — people asking why there aren’t multiple pronunciations on characters like 还, 着, 单, etc.

I think I mentioned one time making the character card for alternative pronunciations a different color, like how the dictionary items are all dark grey, so that it’d be easier to know which pronunciation we’re aiming for in the review session (for 还, pink could be hai2, and some other color (let’s say maroon) could be huan2).

So! The idea is this: if Hanzihero ever does consider adding in multiple pronunciation character cards (maybe for like the second most common pronunciation in cases like 着 where there are 4 pretty common pronunciations), maybe it could be an opt-in/opt-out feature. Where folks choose whether or not they want to suffer through it.

Just a raw thought, not a need

I haven’t given much thought on how the alternative pronunciation integration would look. I think the current leaning is to show these other pronunciations exist, but we will do the “block and shake the input” on them when you accidentally type them in.

The reasoning is due to how the inter-weaving works for the words the character is found in: all the words of that character are restricted to its chosen primary pronunciation, beyond the change of tone (to tone 5, for example).

Having an opt-in alternative to allow one to accept these alternative pronunciations as answers could be interesting. Differentiating them with color would be a clever way to remind that this pronunciation you won’t find in the words

Definitely agree that it’s a bad experience to type a valid pronunciation for a character and have it marked as wrong :grimacing:
