What is the current plan for custom words? I’m at the tail end of HSK, and TBH I’m seeing less and less value from a predefined set of characters/vocab. I’d like to continue using HH because I like the UI and other features. However I need the ability to plug in arbitrary words and phrases from immersion. Else TBH I’m better off with Anki or just not using SRS.
Good question. We’ll discuss this this week to see where this would fit in with some other things we have planned. I’ll update this thread afterward.
We hope to have a beta version out of what we currently refer to as “dictionary words” in roughly December.
The initial version of this feature will include a way to add any CC-CEDICT words to one’s review pile. The words here will be different than the set of HanziHero vocabulary:
- We won’t provide any mnemonic. Instead, we will list out the definitions that we get from the CEDICT entry. One of those definitions (or a user-supplied one) can be selected to be the “primary” definition that shows throughout the UI.
- As long as the CEDICT headword is only hanzi, it will be imported (e.g., something like 3Q - “thank you” would not be imported).
- This means that vocabulary words which contain the pronunciation variations we don’t teach (e.g. 好奇/hao4qi2 which contains 好/hao4 instead of 好/hao3) would of course still be imported and select-able. Allowing one to cover any vocabulary word that doesn’t fit into the “HanziHero system” as long as it is in CEDICT.
I saw in the settings an “Enroll in dictionary beta” option. Does that mean the feature is out already, or that only users who select that will be part of a trial group for the feature when it’s ready?
We’re in the process of putting final touches on the initial beta version and will announce it this week along with docs along how to enable it along with how it works.
