🎨 Custom Mnemonics

Hello!

To better support “leeches” or trouble items/frequently wrong items, while surfacing can help, as of today you only have a few ways to deal with it:

  • Brute force it
  • Write in your notes field and try to come up with ways to remember

But the core issue is the mnemonic didn’t work for you. With over thousands of mnemonics it’s going to be inevitable that some of them don’t work.

So instead of bruteforcing or writing a mnemonic from scratch, what if you could just do a few small edits and retain the highlighting right inside the mnemonic? To have a launchpad where you can easily make your own mnemonic to remember.

Of course, you can recreate mnemonic tokens as you need. You can either use the toolbar to insert or you can type it out yourself:

As you can see it comes with autocomplete which’ll automatically pop open. If you’re using a keyboard, you can exit a mnemonic token just by pressing tab or enter.

So far I’ve only shown a character mnemonic, but it also works for components:

and words:

Finally, if you have a custom mnemonic saved and want to start over, all you have to do is delete it all and save. It’ll revert back to the original mnemonic.

Right now your custom mnemonics do surface in Lessons & Reviews, but only if it was set prior to the session. We’ll of course integrate it into the Lessons/Reviews, but I first wanted to collect any feedback/issues/bugs before proceeding

Happy studying!

Thanks a lot for the update! I am wondering if you could implement us changing the mnemonics for the radicals too? I would like to use the same mnemonics as WaniKani for all the radicals since I’m trying to learn Kanji and Hanzi at the same time. Thanks again!

Welcome to the forum!

You should be able to change the mnemonics for the components

I didn’t demonstrate in the GIFs above, but you can make the content of the token be whatever you want. So if you want to change, for example, “handgun” to “water pistol”, everytime you see “handgun” in a mnemonic you can just replace it with “water pistol” by clicking on it and editting it in line.

Please let me know if you’re having trouble!
