Curious About the Review Limit

Hello! This is for those who use the review limit feature, and admin’s perspective. What is the idea behind the review limit feature?

I get maybe you don’t want to review more than 50, 100, 200 items per day, but what’s the difference between setting that review limit versus just ending your review limit early? Would you get backlogged with reviews for several days, would you just be reviewing younger items?

Personally, when I’m on top of my game, I’m having about 100-200 reviews a day, which is manageable, but I wonder how my progress would be affected if I set a 100 item/day limit.

All SRS system have due dates for cards (how they calculate them is different but in the end a card is due at X time). When that card is due, it’s due. Review limits or other things (like say vacation mode) don’t make it not due, they just hide it so you don’t feel bad about missing the original due date.

I don’t know the specifics of how HH has implemented it, but that kind of doesn’t matter. It’s meant to be reviewed today, but you’re not because the system isn’t showing it to you. Ending the reviews earlier vs system limit might have some technical difference (i.e. which exact cards you skip might be slightly different), but at a high level it’s exactly the same.

The rationale behind the review limit is psychological more than anything else. We added it for those who were away from HanziHero for a while and came back with a lot of reviews on their plate. By having a set review limit, they can go through a good amount each day without it being overwhelming.

It’s no different than having a review backlog and doing like half of them and coming back the next day. From a strict SRS perspective it is “better” to just do the reviews now, but realistically it may be better to spread them out as well for various reasons, such as it better fitting into one’s schedule and desired level of review commitment.
