The functionality for editing character mnemonics is wonderful, but there are some characters that aren’t included in HanziHero at all.
It would be great if users could create their own custom character entries for characters that aren’t yet offered in HanziHero (or perhaps never will be, since there are thousands of niche characters).
That way, we could include them in our normal study routine alongside the built-in characters.
To keep the feature straightforward, each custom character could be associated only with the account that created it.
The creation process might go something like: enter the character in a field, select its components, assign its pronunciation(s), and then create its mnemonic just like any other character.
I think they just need unlock the dictionary from blocking single character items and then it’ll “just work”. It was mentioned in another thread they were thinking about it. While I’m not high enough level to need anything outside the HSK stuff that’s included, it def seems like a reasonable thing to support. Once you go dictionary items, the “character vs word” distinction isn’t really a thing.
Glad to hear the custom mnemonics have been of help!
Yes, I do think since there are thousands of niche characters, it is best to explore unlocking the dictionary to cover those more obscure ones as @kaysik noted
Though your suggestion of inputting them yourself is more encompassing. I wonder how many niche characters aren’t covered in dictionary…
As someone who avidly uses the dictionary feature, there are quite a few characters that are indeed not covered by the main HH curriculum.
HOWEVER, to the point that they are, in fact, quite niche, I think it’s not a huge loss to lack them as part of one’s day-to-day lessons, since you’re probably encountering one of the few if not the only case in which that character is being used.
