I just realized that a true Chinese classic was missing from this sharethread: the famous/infamous “小蘋果” by the Chopsticks Brothers (筷子兄弟) with its own Wikipedia page:
Little Apple (song) - Wikipedia. Here is the youtube video for the song itself (the video is not great but the sound is OK):

and here is its extended version with the beginning that provides more context:

Mr. Miss (先生小姐)'s 明天的烦恼交给明天 (an a cappella version):

with lyrics:

All of the songs from this album are really quite good, too. Probably one of the best albums from Taiwan in the past couple years.

I’ve been listening to some Cantonese music eventually. The cool thing is that if you are familiar with Mandarin and listen as you read along with the lyrics, you can see the high degree of similarity between the languages.

Try as I might to avoid it for the sake of focusing more on Mandarin, I think I’ll end up learning some Cantonese at some point soon. Funnily enough, the entire reason I even became interested in China, Taiwan, and Chinese languages was due to watching artsy Hong Kong films back in college. Slowly coming full circle.

I have a bit of a strange request, haha. Does anyone have any recommendations for music that is less on the ballad side of things? Thinking more like rap, rock, metal, that sort of thing. I’ve been trying to go through the top charts on things like Apple Music but it seems like ballads are insanely popular in the mainland and Taiwan.

I don’t have any particular suggestions, but looking through the top chart on Rate Your Music for "
chinese" is a good place to start to find albums. You can look over the tags for each album to get an idea of what it sounds like before trying it out. However, given the nature of the site, the results will be a bit biased towards being more hip and artistic (as they would say in Chinese, 很文青), usually at the expense of more popular albums being buried down unreasonably low in the list.

This is my impression as well. One useful source is ChinaTalk on Substack, they regularly have posts on a less conventional music they like, and they also offer a spot for other people, like Jake Newby with his Concrete Avalanche (a free newsletter on music in China Concrete Avalanche | Jake | Substack; please support if you can. Here are his playlists:
Buy Music Club), etc. As an example:
【退格Backspace】 - 自卑的冠軍Narcissus’s Death (official MV) (youtube.com)

Exploring Concrete Avalanche (see above) further, with many interesting songs, i will post this one, because it just fit the mood when i found it. (A bit short on words though🙂.) Wang Wen, “Mail from the river”.

I’m a fan of metal / progressive music and recently this pretty awesome chinese band, although the lyrics are quite strange^^
