I think this topic has been mentioned here and there, but I couldn’t find a straightforward fix / answer. I am currently in learning HSK 2 characters, but I haven’t gotten through all of the HSK 1 words. Meanwhile, I am getting HSK 2 words. This is a bit of a drag, because I am using HSK 1 graded readers and sentence banks to consolidate the knowledge, so I don’t have the words I need.
I know I could go through and manually prioritize the HSK 1 words, but I plan to follow the leveled readers and sentences medium term so this will be an issue regardless of current level.
Bulk prioritize would work. Please let me know any other solutions.
P.S. I will throw in a random feature request here: the pinyin validation / pop-up hint is super-helpful in reviews when I type the meaning instead of the pronunciation, for example. For word reviews, I would like it to give me a pop-up hint (rather than count it wrong) if I type half of the word right, but omit the second half. For new words, I often am so focused on recall that when I remember the pronunciation of the first character and enter the pinyin, that I hit “enter” by habit and get it wrong. For example, let’s say the review word is ban4 nian2, and I type ban4 “enter”. Whoops!
Sadly there is no bulk/general solution for this. You’re correct that the only thing to do is manually prioritise things that you want, and that that’s an annoying solution.
The reason why is that HH is setup to teach you characters, the multi-character words are more of an after thought, and it’s following the character list from HSK v3.0 (2021) instead of the HSK v2.0 (2012) list your graded readers probably use. (There’s a nice image of how HSKv2 words fit into HSKv3: https://www.reddit.com/r/ChineseLanguage/comments/mkvq3j/new_and_existing_hsk_vocabulary_compared/). As such if you’re following HSK v2 content it’ll basically forever be out of sync as they’re different lists. You won’t miss anything, everything form HSK v2 is inside the HSK v3, but they’re re-ordered and there is a lot more in the new list.
Personally I just prioritise things I care about, and let the rest sort itself out since I need to learn them all eventually anyway, the order isn’t that important. But I do completely agree it’s annoying not being able to setup your own order more easily.
Thank you, Kaysik. To clarify I did find some graded readers and sentences from HSK 3.0, which I am using; so I was trying to synch the word order of lessons with the character order.
A more generalized solution we can do here is validate you have enough pinyin syllables to match the number of characters in the word – great idea!
It seems like two paths to explore here are either lists for bulk prioritization or add a new setting which makes sure you do all HSK 1 words before getting any HSK 2 words I also imagine other options here we haven’t yet explored
for the word prioritization, I guess the bulk prioritization is a more general solution but a settings switch to go by HSK level is probably more user friendly. either works, especially if the bulk prioritization is linked to the curriculum filtering, which is already quite general.
