I’ve been using HH for 10 months now and have covered 1000 characters & words. So I’m clearly a fan My main frustration is that the most convenient time I have to practice is on the subway, where on Chrome on my iPhone I am constantly losing connection between stations while doing review/learning sessions. It seems to only cache a few items at a time, and then I’m sat staring at the ‘no connection’ pop-up and waiting for more items, which is a pretty inefficient use of time and interrupts the UX.
I imagine an app would allow for offline progress with syncing to your cloud servers when connection is restored. That’s my primary motivation for an app, though I’m sure there would be other benefits too. I’m also sure it takes a lot of work to build a mobile app, though it has been mentioned by @phil over the years, so I’d love to hear if there’s a progress update to entice me to stay for years to come
We haven’t yet broken ground on the app yet, but hope to make some moves in that direction in the near future.
If you haven’t already, I recommend trying the new study beta we released. We made a lot of improvements for intermittent connections on it.
Before, for Reviews, if we failed to sync reviews/updates to the backend for a certain period of time, we show the pop-up and sort of prevent forward progress. In the background, in that scenario, we continue to retry and once we re-connect we remove the pop-up.
For the new Study mode, we pre-fetch everything and are more resilient with how we handle bad connections. In theory, you should be able to complete nearly the entire session without being connected to the internet, though you would need to ensure you connect at some point before closing the tab so that things sync (and we show an indicator on the screen whenever there are unsynced changes or a bad connection, to make that obvious).
There are further improvements we can make for bad connections or partially offline scenarios with the new architecture we have as well.
So if you have a chance, please enable it and give it a try next time you are on the subway, it should fix most of these problems. At least, that is our aim in doing these offline/retry improvements for the new flow!
